Golden Handcuffs

Golden Handcuffs UK cover

Abby and Mike have achieved the impossible. Having spent the past three years cultivating perfect CVs – having played, danced, raced and captained their way to the tops of their respective year groups – they have landed themselves with graduate jobs at one of the most prestigious firms in the city: Cray McKinley.  The eight thousand-pound ‘golden hellos’ serve as pocket money for their summer-long stay in New York, where the graduates get their first taste of the glamorous, jet-setting lifestyle to come. They’re bright, they’re ambitious, they’re keen, and they’re ready to take on the world.

For Abby, it’s not as easy as she’d anticipated. Try as she might, she just can’t seem to earn people’s respect. Her feeling of uselessness is compounded by the fact that wheezing, spluttering Archie Dickinson assumes her to be his PA, and when Mike suddenly pops up in her department, Abby feels even smaller as he soars straight to the top of the class. There is instant hostility between Abby and Mike – laced with a conflicting sexual attraction. The novelty of free dinners and cab rides home soon wears off, and Mike finds himself wondering where the ‘play’ element to this ‘work hard, play hard’ regime comes in. His tiresome routine is punctuated by angry outbursts from the heart-attack-prone office bully, Stuart Mackins – a man known for throwing chairs at junior analysts – and the occasional trip to a lap-dancing club. It’s reasonable, he reckons, as lifestyles go, but it’s certainly not the go-getting one they told him about when he applied for the job.

The electricity between Abby and Mike is heightened by fact that they sit six feet apart in the office, and are under constant scrutiny from their colleagues. Mixing business with pleasure is never a good idea is the advice Mike receives from the other first-years during a late-night RedBull session. They’re probably right, of course, but they don’t know the full story. And being ‘just good friends’ with Abby Turner is proving harder than Mike is willing to let on.

Finally, a novel written by a twenty-something for twenty-somethings with a heroine who is more concerned with her career than her make-up.

Romania and the European Union

Romania and the EU

The book unravels policy failures in the areas of justice, administrative and agricultural reform and shows how Romania moved backwards politically during the years of negotiations. It is an invaluable book for academics and students who need to know about the practice, as well as the theory, of eastern enlargement, and will be an effective tool for policy-makers, businessmen and others involved with Romania.

Great input was offered by Monica Macovei, the Romanian former Minister for Justice, Armand Gosu, Gelu Trandafir, Valentina Pop, Lavinia Stan, and the list could go on.

One of the most compelling, unsettling novels I’ve read in ages, which should appeal to fans of classy thrillers and literary fiction alike. - SARAH WATERS

A compelling and unpredictable journey… beautifully written, rolls on at a rapid pace and delivers a satisfying punch at the end. - GLOBE AND MAIL

A moving, absorbing story. Kathy Page writes beautifully.HELEN DUNMORE, author of A SPELL OF WINTER

Natalie’s character is a triumph. It’s rare to find a book that can not only move and thrill but also asks fundamental questions about religious belief and the nature of virtue and sin. – GOOD BOOKS GUIDE

Her [Page's] writing, mostly in the present tense, is lit with an immediate sense of period, summoning images which are by turns softly painterly, sharply filmic or as murky as those first television images of the moon landing. – TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMEN

Incredibly evocative and haunting… it keeps you reading, wanting to uncover both Natalie’s past and that of Tuomas Envall. SUNDAY EXPRESS

An elegantly compelling story of how a young girl’s obsession forever changes the lives of those around her… a disciplined exploration of the complexity of human motivation and our need for redemption... – VANCOUVER SUN

Alphabet

Alphabet-book_jacket-sidebar

“Alphabet” is not just highly readable, but one of the strongest, most eloquent, most tightly constructed novels of the year. It is a measure of the quiet artistry of Alphabet that, out of material that would have been at home in the blackest of black comedies, Kathy Page has celebrated, with rare deftness, the resilience of the human heart. - DAVID ROBSON, THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

A complex book, and splendidly written, “Alphabet” is an intensely compelling reading experience that speaks to the power of words and the significance of language in all its dangerous subtleties. – MARC HORTON, THE EDMONTON JOURNAL

Sometimes novelists go too far – and sometimes they manage to demonstrate that too far is the place they needed to go…. - TIME OUT, UK

Simon is real. Simon gets under your skin. You’ll keep reading “Alphabet” because you’ll want to understand how Simon got to Z from A. - THE TIMES

It’s not hard to guess what got Page onto the GG shortlist: sheer chutzpah. Page brashly takes up residence in the head and heart of a convicted murderer, a confirmed woman-hater and desperately lost soul. In fact, it’s a bit unnerving how well we get to know Simon, his darkest moments, his most improbable hopes, and how much we come to care about his effort to change. – THE WEEKEND POST

One of the most complex characters I’ve ever met in a novel. His attempt to win redemption is totally engrossing. – VICTORIA TIMES

The Find

The Find is a moving and compelling exploration of the way an “impossible” relationship comes, against all odds, to transform and define two people’s lives.

Anna Silowski, highly educated, driven and successful, works a curator in a prestigious paleontological museum.   Scott Macleod is so very different to her that they might as well be living in separate worlds:  he dropped out of school, has a confused relationship with his native roots, and an alcoholic father in tow. Anna is at the top of her game, Scott does not even know what his might be.

A day’s prospecting leads Anna to make an extraordinary discovery in the remote part of BC where Scott lives, and sets off a chain of events that will lead to the meeting that will change both their lives.

While Anna seems powerful and in control, things are in fact far from perfect. She’s alone. She’s lived for years with knowledge of her father’s death from a devastating, inheritable disease, telling no one and avoiding intimacy. Now, her excitement about her one in a lifetime discovery is tempered by tensions with Mike Swenson, a charismatic but treacherous colleague who almost succeeds in claiming the find for his own. These and other pressures push her to the brink of breakdown. At the same time, Scott moves towards his own meltdown – and his first real meeting with Anna: in a deserted small town bar, Anna finds herself first confiding in Scott, and then feeling that she can’t cope without him.

Despite feeling out of his depth, Scott accepts Anna’s invitation to work on the excavation of her find. Ostensibly he’s there as camp cook, but really he’s a kind of emotional prop. Anna believes that it is his presence which enables her to deal with the ongoing struggle with Swenson and the technical intricacies of the dig. When native and conservation groups unite and demonstrate against the excavation, Scott’s loyalties are divided, but he and Anna avert disaster at the last minute and bring the excavation to a successful conclusion.

However, the growing attraction between them can’t be denied. They become lovers. Soon they are struggling over what each of them thinks this relationship is and can be, and – as Anna moves towards taking the test that will define her medical situation once and for all – over how long it will last, and what it means. Would it be wrong, as Anna argues, for her to let him stay with her? Has she used him? Will he abandon her? How will each of them survive without the other? None of these questions have simple answers, but The Find is a moving and compelling exploration of the way an impossible relationship comes, against all odds, to transform and define two people’s lives.

The Night Town Trilogy – Tygers of Wrath

Hollywood…film noir…the supernatural.

The most striking and seductive elements of horror and mystery blend in startling and visionary ways in Edgar and Anthony-nominated novelist Craig McDonald’s Night Town Trilogy.

New Los Angeles — dubbed “Night Town” by its long-lived residents — is a mysterious movie studio constructed on a fogbound island off the coast of Mexico.

There, in a re-imagined City of Angels designed and constructed solely for moving-making, stars long-thought dead toil on, eternally typecast in brooding films made for a rich and sinister cinéphile clientele.

In Night Town, silent film stars, method actors and Fifities blonde bombshells share the screen.

In the Night Town Trilogy, three very different detectives will face their own demons and make unthinkable decisions in order to wring terrible truths from the darkest of dream factories.

James Dean, Bruce Lee, Valentino, Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield — they all “live” on in Night Town.

The Night Town Trilogy – Immortal Gain

Immortal Gain is a propulsive, stunningly original collision of film noir and the supernatural; a clever, quicksilver blending of the crime and horror genres. Imagine Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep as re-imagined by Anne Rice; The Maltese Falcon as written by Charlaine Harris.

Hollywood, 1956: Los Angeles private investigator Blake Yeats is a silver-tongued, good-looking shamus who specializes in tawdry divorce investigations that do more to enrich his love life than thicken his wallet. He at last scores his first big case when he is hired to find a missing young would-be actress.

Laura Day fled the family farm with the usual dreams of Hollywood fame but promptly vanished after making contact with a mysterious independent studio specializing in moody crime movies fawned over by French cinéphiles and East Coast film buffs.

Blake has barely begun snooping around “Bring on the Night Studios” when he also becomes a missing person; seduced and kidnapped by a femme fatale with a strangely familiar face.

The private eye awakens off the coast of Mexico, bound for a secretive, fog-shrouded island. There he finds the studio’s private movie lot — a reconstructed and re-imagined Hollywood populated by presumed-dead movie greats… the place where the missing farm girl was last seen.

Officially dubbed “New Los Angeles” but called “Night Town” by the immortal, eternally typecast actors who toil there, it is a city where it’s “always circa the 1940s, always night and always raining.” It’s a working “set” where dreamy films noirs are churned out for an exclusive clientele of night owls with extraordinarily long life-spans…

The reeling detective presses on in his search for Laura, but also finds a new role forced upon him. Provided with a new office and lavish new apartment, Blake is told he is now the studio’s only sanctioned policing agent — the closest thing to anything like law in Night Town.

Blake’s first assignment: solving the brutal murders of three artists linked to a new film titled “Immortal Gain” — a mysterious production to which the troubled studio has tied its future prosperity. What Blake finds is a waking nightmare where every clue serves only to deepen the mystery; where each of his actions fosters increasingly harrowing consequences.

With a cast of characters including James Dean, Thelma Todd and Rudolph Valentino, Immortal Gain is a sly and sexy, page-turning supernatural noir that breathes new life into detective and vampire fiction.

North Pass

Across the US / Mexico border from El Paso is the city of Ciudad Juárez, an industrial zone dominated by the maquiladoras, massive factories producing American consumer goods at Mexican labor rates.  The cities are so closely intertwined that they are almost one entity, except that on one side there is American wealth and on the other side is a boiling mass of violence and crime.

People make a life in Ciudad Juárez despite an ongoing battle between the authorities and two rival drug cartels. But forgotten amid all of this are the crimes called feminicidios, the female murders.  Since 1993 more than 400 women have vanished or been found raped and murdered.  Only a handful of cases have been tried, and in all of them there have been allegations of false confessions, police corruption and torture.

Kelly Courter has fled Texas and started a new life in Ciudad Juárez as a punching bag in local boxing matches and as a drug mule for his Mexican friend, Estéban. He’s also involved in a relation with Estéban’s sister, Paloma, who has a personal crusade in the dead women of Juárez.

We also meet Rafael Sevilla, an aging policeman trying to turn Kelly against Estéban’s drug suppliers, and Ortíz, a sometime fight promoter who Paloma hints has a much darker agenda.

A relapse leaves Kelly circling the drain and when he manages to right himself again he finds Paloma has disappeared. When her violated body turns up in a field not far from his apartment, he becomes the number one suspect in her death.

In jail Kelly is subjected to repeated abuse at the hands of police until a serious beating leaves him in a coma. Sevilla, unconvinced of Kelly’s too-convenient guilt, takes up the case with the help of an insider from the investigation. He discovers the truth about Paloma’s abduction and zeroes in on Ortíz. The man leads Sevilla to a wealthy maquila owner, Rafa Madrigal.

Sevilla infiltrates the hidden den where Madrigal hosts “parties” featuring bloodsport fighting between men and animals alike, as well the sexual abuse of innocent women lured off the streets.  The police, tipped off by Sevilla, raid the site and Sevilla takes this opportunity to gun down Madrigal under color of authority.

In the end there is little to celebrate. Kelly is still in a coma and officially under indictment for Paloma’s murder, but at least the man truly responsible has been brought to the only justice that was permanent and possible in El Paso Del Norte, Ciudad Juárez, the North Pass.

Live Fast, Die Young
Misadventures in Rock & Roll America

Two men sit on a jetty by an alligator–infested lake in Winter Haven, Florida and sing Happy Birthday to little known (and long dead) country-rock musician Gram Parsons. It is the last in a series of utterly pointless gestures made to celebrate a string of faded and forgotten stars. The slightly confused expressions on their faces make it obvious that they aren’t entirely sure how they’ve ended up there. Those two men are Chris Price and Joe Harland.

Imagine The X-Files … four centuries ago.

Delilah

Maligned for three thousand years as the courtesan who revealed the mighty Samson’s secret for money, Delilah has become synonymous with treachery. But behind the biblical myth is a tale far more complex and tragic, about a woman of confused heritage and motives, who chose a path that she later came to regret. This is a story of love, faith, lust and revenge, and ultimately the quest for redemption. Delilah is the daughter of an Israelite couple, Beulah and Abner. When her father, the foreman of a vineyard, dies unexpectedly, the Philistine owner of the vineyard, Achish, marries her mother and adopts Delilah. Raised as another daughter of the house, her step-brother Ekron dotes on Delilah whilst her step-sister Hemin despises her. Samson enters their life when Delilah is sixteen. He is betrothed to Hemin, but after a bloody brawl over her dowry, Hemin
refuses to marry him; she accepts the offer of the Philistine Lord Phicol instead. Samson spurns the offer of Delilah in Hemin’s place and sets fire to the vineyard, two things for which Delilah cannot forgive him. Samson’s interest in Delilah is aroused when, five years later, he rescues her and Achish from road bandits. Noticing his attraction, Ekron brokers a deal between Delilah and Phicol, who asks Delilah to spy on Samson and his revolutionary activities and eventually deliver him to the Philistines. Spurred by his past transgressions against her family, Delilah agrees.
Delilah’s three attempts and her ultimate success at betrayal, familiar to readers from the bible story, stem from bastardized retellings of the true story. Here, Eleanor de Jong explores what might have really happened.

Black List

This supremely accomplished debut thriller, the first in a series featuring CID Agent Matt Cunnigham, is centred around a US Army investigative team as they try to piece together the brutal murder of a retired General. Before long, further murders occur, and it appears that the killer has an agenda. However, their investigation is hampered at every step by men who will stop at nothing to keep the past a secret. Finally venturing into war-torn Afghanistan, the truth they uncover is more shocking than any of them could have imagined. Black List is about someone who has spent their life fighting for a cause that ultimately proves meaningless, the immense risk that such people take, and how little reward they  receive in return. It’s about personal ambition and ‘higher purpose’ mentality overshadowing the value of human life. Most of all, it’s about the human cost of war, both to soldiers and civilians. Most of the time, the public never even knows what soldiers fight and die for.

Birdcage Walk

Hoxton, East London, in the first year of the twentieth century. George Woolfe is a young, working class printmaker who has grown frustrated by the constraints of his class and station. He sees an opportunity to escape when he chances to meet Charles Booth, author of one of the most comprehensive social surveys of London ever undertaken. But this apparently auspicious encounter has tragic consequences for George who, within six months, is charged with the murder of a young woman and becomes the last man to be hanged at the notorious Newgate Gaol.
Combining authorial imagination with detailed research into the period, including family trees, the records of the Old Bailey, the 1901 Census and Charles Booth’s own handwritten notebooks, this novel vividly brings to life a real-life Edwardian murder and the possible
miscarriage of justice that followed it. Set at the dawning of a new century, when the rigid class and gender boundaries of the Victorian age were soon to shift and realign, it is a novel about confinement: for the affluent young woman as much as the bright working class boy.

Someone Else’s Garden

Spanning half a century, Someone Else’s Garden is an epic tale of mothers and daughters and of love and rejection which explores the essence of abject cruelty and flawless goodness that defines the Indian soul. A farm girl and eldest of seven children, Mamta learns early on what it means to be born female in rural India. We follow her as she flees the horrors of her arranged marriage and the village to make a home for herself in a small city. Eventually saved from becoming one of the nameless and faceless millions of rejected humanity by a sublime love, Mamta survives and triumphs to become an example of a complete soul, empowered, responsible and inspiring humanity in others. Sharing her life journey,  experiences and connections with a host of characters including her mentoring mother Lata Bai, the saintly Lokend Bhai, her ever-loving brother Prem, the soul-searching bandit Daku Manmohan and the brutal landlord Ram Singh, we are compelled to seek answers within ourselves to questions that have remained unchanged over time.
Someone Else’s Garden transcends geographical divides and cultural chasms to expose the commonality of the human condition. Set against a backdrop of caste divides, banditry, female prejudice and vigorous colour, it is more than just Mamta’s personal story. It is also a story of redemption … of belief in the power of that hidden higher self which stays true no matter how crippling the circumstances or how great the loss.

And It Was the 9th Hour

And It Was the 9th Hour puts into a new perspective the 23rd of August 1944, when Romania rebelled against the Axis Powers and joined the Allies for the remainder of World War II. The book places the role of the Royal Family above that of the Communist Party. As a result, it was banned from all bookshops and libraries soon after its publication. However, in 1971, Zinca received the Bucharest Writers’ Association Award for this work.

Bloody November

Bloody November deals with the assassination of Nicolae Iorga, a former Romanian Prime Minister and world-class historian. It took 20 years of research and combating death threats for Haralamb Zinca to complete the novel, which was eventually published in 1999.

The Sources of Morgana

A beautifully crafted fantasy trilogy taking inspiration from the folk legends and songs of the Danish Golden age and the Romantic era. Helle Ryding has created a magical world filled to the brim with believable, interesting characters and creatures, elves, worms, gnomes to mention but a few, and a strong, resilient heroine who will change the world forever.

The three episodes are called The Curse of the Black Raven, The Four Winds and Rainbow Dust and succeed in bringing to life Elisa’s story in a most convincing manner. The beautiful drawings which adorned the original book covers are optionally available to you!

Being Mr. Green

A most ordinary guy is about to encounter his first romance, which will turn out more than just a tad special due to the girl involved. Same as lead character Ben, readers are unprepared for what awaits them when Vonc turns out to be wild and unpredictable.

Ben loves it how she steers him away from his doting parents. Without hesitation, he throws himself into a romantic adventure that will not pass without carving deep into his soul.

Insurrection at the Graveyard

A new road makes the removal of the town’s little cemetery a necessity. Anoucha’s beloved grandma will have to move to another grave site.

Dealing with children’s feelings for deceased family members. Quality from one of Belgium’s best loved / best selling authors.

Toxine

When the cemetery’s watchdog dies, having bitten off three fingers of Wim, the twin brothers John and Dave are convinced that Wim’s father has poisoned the animal in an act of revenge.

But then Wim dies, totally unexpected.

John and Dave are certain that there must be more to this than meets the eye. The two decide to start an investigation…

Voices from the Other Side

Ruth and Bo befriend two brothers who help their father compile his radio show for a local, independent station. While this goes on, Bo’s boyfriend Shane and his mother disappear mysteriously. Before long, bizarre occasions are the norm, and a drawing that shows a microphone and headphones plays an important role. Tension rises even more when the two girls inadvertently get to hear a story about brain machines, and one of the two brothers turns seriously ill… Voices from the Other Side is a breathtaking youth book that deals with a strange therapy for people in a coma. A treatment that actively seeks the borders of our consciousness, and thus encounters death too!

A thrilling encounter with coma and death, by an author with 18 translated titles to his credit!

Stop Grandpa!

Shortly after the passing of Tilly’s grandmother, her grandpa seemingly starts a whole new life. New girlfriend, motorcycle and ‘young’ behaviour included…

Believable family situations are clearly Frank Pollet’s forte.

In the Neighbourhood

The Spot family lives a spotless existence. Until their new neighbours arrive: Tom and Sally Hunt, their children, five cats and Shit, their dog.

Although the Hunt family has no idea they are doing anything wrong, they more often than not hunt their neighbours, driving them crazy.

Six print-runs & a theatre play adaptation – success throughout. Real close to everyday life, yet irresistibly witty and cute.

Dogs Not Allowed

Johnny’s grandfather is acting rather bizarre of late. When the diagnosis has been made – Alzheimer – he’ll have to go to a retirement home.

Alzheimer’s believably presented to the 10+ age group.

In touching, tender writing, offering true to life characters.

When Goldfinger Comes Out

Tim’s world is falling apart: His parents have decided to turn their backs to the big city and move out to the country. From one day to another, Tim finds himself in the Eifel, a place that could not seem to be more boring. When he goes out with his dog Bibi to explore the surroundings, the two find an old hunting lodge in the forest where an old man lives.

By and by, Tim settles in, gets to know other kids in the neighbourhood and… unravels the old man’s secret. A secret that is far more exciting than anything Tim ever experienced in the city!

Three Mysterious Keys

Turmoil in the small town of Bad Münstereifel. Somebody has broken into the museum and knocked down the friendly guard. Nothing has been stolen except an apparently worthless old key.

Tim and his friends Steffi and Ollie are curious, especially since they had just visited the museum with their class the day before. They will investigate the case.

Skeleton Scare

Justaboutanywheretown. A village like so many others. A shopping mall, city house, some pubs, a karaoke bar and, on the outskirts, a cemetery.

A typical kind of place where nothing much happens, one would think.

But today Justaboutanywheretown is to live through one of the most remarkable days in its history. And it all begins with a massive storm, raging over the village as if the devil himself unleashed it!

Flashy, furious and fast, this surprising ‘horror’ story reads like a roller coaster movie full of action & scenes in rapid succession!

Raspoetin

Three youngsters befriend a newcomer to their class, more out of pity than anything else, because he has a stutter. But, same as his deceased father, Peter is a ventriloquist. And Raspoetin, one of the four puppets Peter uses, does not stutter…

The sole youth book ever to win the best suspense thriller of the year award in Belgium. The jury rightly praised the lively and refreshing style of writing, the remarkable strength with which the youngsters’ characters were put to paper and the highly ingenious plot.

In print for 20+ years (!!!), translated into Swedish and Norwegian, and upon popular demand finally followed up by Raspoetin Returns (available soon), this is a true no. 1 classic title which deserves a place in every publisher’s list! A sure-fire success, destined to keep readers spellbound!

By an author who has scored 18 translated titles so far!

Ma, Pa, Disaster!?

Thanks to the project approach, press coverage has been massive!

Even the Queen of Belgium came to see the play & receive a book!

The theatre play will perform over 150 times, reaching 30,000 + pupils!

This alone accounts for 3,000+ copies in direct sales (to schools). And indirect, thousands more pupils that will want the book too. This series needs top distribution & grasp on the Walloon market. In the French language, the follow up to Père, mere… quelle galère!? will be Nuages et quelques gouttes de pluie in early 2009. This time, the accompanying play will enter the competition at the famous Huy youth theatre festival, with the clear aim to get to play well into France.

The accompanying book needs a good quality French publishing house. The French publisher gets the Walloon sales as an ‘extra’, for starters. There are concrete plans to play Quebec, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Next up: the new production –planned in 2010- which will link European
lead characters with Colombia. As partner, Amnesty International will provide content & support. The authors are currently talking to several Amnesty International departments throughout Europe to work with.

Sarah resolves to get closer to Byron to find out more about his family… and get to the bottom of the alleged murder. In so doing, she learns that the family are Wiccans. As Sarah learns more about Byron’s family, she cuts through popular misconceptions about Wicca, finding out what Wiccans believe, how they worship, and what values they hold dear.

Different all right, and perfect for 14+ ‘outsiders’ amongst kids.

Hannah and her brother are never allowed to touch any of the door-knobs with their hands and visits from and to friends are forbidden. Worst of all: Hannah’s mother is highly unpredictable. Sometimes she is extremely euphoric, on other occasions she does not leave her bed for days on end.

Hannah does not understand it, but she does sense that her mother is different from other mothers. Out of necessity, Hannah takes care of the household and does everything to hide her family situation from her friends at school. One day, her mother tries to commit suicide. Now it is no longer possible to keep the situation a secret…

In Belgium the book got to be intensively used by health workers and by SIMILES, a self-help group for children and partners of people with a mental disease.

As a matter of fact, research points out that 1 out of 10 children in the western world is living in a family where one of the parents suffers from a mental illness.

This subject simply cannot remain a taboo any longer.

A gut-wrenching real, true to life novel, literary writing of the best kind, tackling a ‘tough’ subject gracefully.

Adam’s Peak

On a stifling August day, six-year-old Clare Fraser and seven-year-old Rudy Vantwest make eye contact from opposite sides of their street. For an instant they are connected, then each turns away. Clare to the shelter of the garden sprinkler, Rudy to the excitement of his brother’s
impending birth. Twenty-five years later, Clare and Rudy, strangers living continents apart, fixtures of each others memories and imaginations, connect again. Overturning the guarded, insular lives they both lead, two events “one an accident, the other an act of terror“ transform them both and bind the Vantwest and Fraser families irrevocably.

Adam‘s Peak weaves back and forth between a Montreal suburb and a Colombo private school, between a Ceylon tea estate at the end of the Second World War and a small Scottish town in the early 1960s, its characters struggling to come to terms with themselves and with their powerful connections to people and places they have tried to escape.

Offers young readers a great, traditional style novel.

While that is happening, the moment of their farewell draws near. But when the goose leaves the girl behind, the expected end turns out not to be the final one. A remarkable ‘extra’ awaits the girl the following Spring…

This book reads like a classic, ‘now’ fairytale, but is so much more. Partly thanks to it having happened in real everyday life to the author (containing photos on the first pages of the book to proof as much), but moreover as she uses her inspiring story to show young readers what it entails to take on the responsibility to care for an animal. At the same time, what she lived through helps readers understand and
deal with loss, feelings of guilt or separation… An oftentimes sorry, but inevitable part of life to which this book is a wonderful introduction.

A Toy Story

The other night, just as I was about to leave my studio following a long day’s work, I heard a faint sound. I turned around. There was no one.

As I opened the studio door, and was about to turn off the lights, I heard it again, “hmm hmm”. This time, it seemed to come from the other side of the room, next to the window. The voice became clearer as I got closer.

“Over here” I heard a whisper.

“Where?” I asked.

“Over here, next to the red toy car.”

Well, toys, you and I know, are not supposed to speak. But as I mentioned, I was working in the studio since morning, it was pretty late, and I was getting tired.

Anyway, it was there that I first heard one of my toys speak. Or, maybe, they have been speaking to me all along, but only at that time did I begin hearing them?

The story of a soldier in search of the city of lost toys, as told by an elephant.

Ghosts on the Loose

Kevin and his parents are on holiday, staying in a Scottish castle. Soon, it becomes obvious to them that there are several ghosts present.
Funny and thrilling situations follow one another in rapid succession. The story is cleverly build up in such a way that children who are not too fond of reading or are not yet overly experienced readers do not have to struggle through the whole book all alone… The chapters are explicitly written on three different levels, and these are clearly marked.

Because of this, certain chapters can be read by the child, others are meant to be read by the child together with a parent or grand-parent, big brother or sister, the babysitter.

The highest level is there for the adult to read to the child, who can then re-read it himself / herself later. This mixture is of course ideal for very young and beginning readers, helping them to get ‘into’ a story like in no other book before!

Ideal material to get beginning readers interested in books. With ghosts, fun, some tension and family warmth. And young readers will be proud, having read a ‘thick’ book!

The Captain and Me

“Mummy, daddy, I have been on the Captain’s ship!” I yelled excitedly, while grabbing hold of a sandwich on our breakfast table.
“The Captain? Oh, I see,” daddy said.
“We fought and we attacked pirates…”
“Attacked pirates, well of course,” mummy said.
In a hurry I took hold of my schoolbag.
“Yes, I climbed high into the mast and…”
“Oh yes, the mast,” my big sister said.
Like a real pirate, legs spread wide apart, I marched out of the kitchen.
“The door!” they all yelled.

The Art of Listening

We love to talk, but isn’t it wonderful to meet a person who really listens? Being with him or her brings intense joy. We live amidst so much stress that the combined sound of the city that surrounds us and what we feel inside only makes us talk louder. Listening is welcoming the other, which is the first step toward mutual understanding and comprehension, friendship and love. Paying attention to what children, friends, grandparents, sick and wise people tell, has you open up your mind, set your selfishness aside and enrich yourself. Francesc Torralba’s book is a precise, to the point guide in this process. He learns you to develop The Art of Listening, both in depth and personal.

After becoming a philosopher at the University of Barcelona, Mr. Torralba studied theology at the Theological University of Catalan and went on to work for the Ramon Llull University. He won several prizes with his essays and studies, publishing several books in Catalan. The Art of Listening is his international breakthrough. The commercial success of The Art of Listening came to be mostly because of the closeness of the subject to all human beings. Its initial release sold over 10,000 copies in mere weeks, soon to be followed by international acclaim.

How to Get a Celeb’s Body

Elise Lindsay is the fitness trainer responsible for Coleen McLoughlin’s now famous body.

Having already made her name as a top personal trainer, choreographer and presenter, last year Elise was asked to interview for the role of coaching Coleen Mcloughlin to front a fitness DVD with Universal Pictures. The interview was a success and she was then asked to meet Coleen. They hit it off immediately and embarked on a gruelling 2 month project, training 3-4 times a week, developing not just physically but mentally too.

After some filming with the crew, it became apparent that Coleen was very natural in front of the camera when Elise was with her, so it was then decided that Elise would be a co-presenter on the DVD to make sure that it came across as naturally as possible. She was also to select a further two dancers for the shoot.

During the filming, Coleen and Elise got on famously and when it was nearing the finish, Coleen said that she would really miss Elise and asked her to stay on as her personal trainer.

The result is the beautiful body which thousands of women now admire and aspire to.

Muhammad Ali – Still the Greatest!

Muhammad Ali, possibly the world’s most famous man alive, is presented here in his “three lives”: that of the all time no. 1 boxer, that of a man who fought for equal rights and the freedom to choose his own religion, and, last but not least, that of the man as lives life today: a superstar with Parkinson’s who simply refuses to give in, living an extraordinary life still, drawing crowds wherever he goes all over the globe.

Preceded by an informative intro piece that sketches all boxing heroes that came before, Ali’s story proofs him to be ‘Still the Greatest’ all right!

The first transatlantic, all-inclusive biography on the greatest athlete ever! Sports, yes, but a rare book on a rare athlete, that delves oh so much deeper – Muhammad Ali is all about sports, but just as well about politics, religion, freedom and today’s situation with regards to research into Parkinsons. A killer book!

Yesterday’s Tomorrow – A Confrontation With the Work of Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen achieved legendary status as a poet, singer/songwriter and no 1 when it comes to coupling literature and popular music.

Marc Hendrickx scored big time with his Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali biographies, garnered a good reputation as a successful youth book writer, whilst being a hit in the Belgian theatre world as well. Yesterday’s Tomorrow has both writers in a literary meeting of souls… Hendrickx faces Cohen’s visions on subjects such as the ever searching human being, evaluating encounters with happiness, understanding, background, faith, life’s goal, love, ageing and death in the process. Whilst doing so, he offers his own insights alongside Cohen’s, thus giving these texts and thoughs of “Yesterday’s” a new “Tomorrow” indeed. A book for Cohen’s fandom and far beyond it, as proven by the great international sales stablished until now.

Leonard Cohen is touring extensively all over the world, 2008/9. His continual presence nowadays is a great aid in promoting this top release!

Elvis A. Presley – Music, Man, Myth

The biography to end all biographies! Printed & reprinted forever, scoring top sales in four countries as well as rave reviews from fans and critics alike!

Put quite simple and direct: Elvis A. Presley – Music, Man, Myth is the most representative book on the greatest superstar of all times, period. It set a standard, being THE book for people with an interest in Elvis Presley, offering (in the King’s words) ‘something for everybody’: the whole story, unique details, all sales / hit lists, plenty of ‘rare’ photos. Plus: it’s up to date through NOW on all things Elvis, with chapters through to TODAY.
Brief: this one has it all. If one book deserves the description ‘epic’, this biography is it!

And there’s more good news: even though it is huge, with photography a plenty, it’s quite cheap to produce due to the great options on offer:
- free use of photos o free re-use of lay-out and films

Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile)

There’s plenty of them: “one hit wonders” on the international hit parades who reach the highest peaks of success, only to fall into oblivion forever. What makes this story exceptional is the personality of this “star for a day” and the position she held – Jeanine Deckers, the singing nun, became world famous under the name Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile), scoring a worldwide no. 1 hit record with her own composition Dominique, from Europe to Japan to the U.S.A., where it resided 6 weeks at no. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The year was 1964. Millions of records were sold, Soeur Sourire earned herself a Grammy Award for her recording and saw her life turned into a Hollywood movie one year later, starring Debbie Reynolds. Over 40 years later most people, the young included, are still familiar with the wistful tune, that earned itself a second life around campfires etc.

What most do not know however, is the tragic life story of the singing nun, who, twenty years after her success, committed suicide together with her lesbian friend Annie, in extreme poverty and loneliness. How did it come to this? This intriguing biographic novel, based entirely upon the personal diary and letters of Jeanine Deckers aptly reflects a time period (1950 – 1970), serving to describe how powerful institutions such as the church or the media can duly make and break people. Using a prime example to great effect, Sister Smile / Soeur Sourire is a highly relevant book today, demonstrating as it does the pitfalls of our modern society.

Sunrise West

Sunrise West navigates between two worlds: the author’s war time and post-war experiences in Europe, and his new life in Australia.

Like his acclaimed memoir East of Time, to which this book forms a sequel, it weaves autobiography, history and imagination, rich in ideas and peopled with an array of memorable characters. Whether describing the momentous or the mundane, Jacob Rosenberg writes with passion, irony and dark humour – and above all, a compelling zest for life.

“It’s brilliant vignettes focus on successive personalities or on sudden epiphanies. We are led through them to see that no ideology or belief structure offers lasting value: the soul must have its distinct resources of strength. As an inner voice says, late in Rosenberg’s wise, prismatic narrative, «A man can escape anything but himself»” (Chris Wallace-Crabbe, literary critic).

“A deeply likable, humane and intelligent voice brings us this hard-won blessing”. (Helen Gerner, one of Australia’s most distinguished writers)

East of Time

In the East of Time, history and imagination, realities and dreams, hopes and disenchantment meet. The book unfolds in reminiscences the weave together into a shimmering tapestry, depicting a lost world. The setting is Lodz, Poland, in the years between the author’s childhood and early maturity, a period overtaken by the cataclysmic events of the 1930s and early 1940s.

The narrative presents a powerful personal testament and reflects the determination of an entire community to remain human in the face of its greatest peril, even at the last frontier of life.

Desert Glass

Desert Glass reflects the myths of the West exemplified in living history, personal testimonials of the different groups of people who influenced the West. Chloride, the former mining camp community where the author lives part-time, functions as a microcosm, enables readers to understand the larger picture. Groups that were instrumental in shaping this community are the Hualapai, the local Native Americans on who’s former territory Chloride is situated; the Rancher who’s ranch surrounds Chloride; the miners and the pioneer women.

Myths are touched upon, facts are provided. Old newspaper articles, poetry and a short story that illustrates the mentality and the ‘one year cycle’ are used as illustration, as are local recipes. Throughout, the reader learns about the dreams and longings of all. Likewise, the mentality that still prevails comes into play. From cowboys – the biggest icon of the West – over Hualapai to the here and now, with visiting tourists a plenty.

Only authentic voices tell the story.

Travels to the Antarctic Peninsula

The author set out to write the first and only complete study! Putting in weeks and months of research and travelling all over the globe, his brand-new manuscript deals with the discovery, exploration and exploitation of the Antarctic Peninsula and off-lying islands. It tells it all, from the early visitors of Southern South-America who in wild storms came very close to the Peninsula without ever actually seeing the land, through to the 30,000+ tourists that visit Antarctica each year today.

Unique, never seen before material accompanies the excelling text. An important book! A must for Antarctica tourists and a book that is of great interest to all with an interest in colonial history.

Tibet Breaks Its Silence

With this brand-new, wonderful essay the author breaks through the obliged silence, registering for once and for all the truth about the Tibetan culture, history and tradition. With this publication she not only targets the Chinese, but most explicitly also the West.

Woeser is convinced that it is the first, foremost task of a writer to bring out the truth, and that is exactly what all articles in this book are about. One by one, they all describe the Tibetan situation, as the author did before on her blog, which despite censorship, closure, hacking and piracy by the Chinese government still succeeded in reaching many thousands worldwide.

Here, on paper, she uncovers the every day situation and paints a crystal-clear picture, showing how Tibetans deal with it.

An impressive chronology of the Tibetan uprising of 2008.

Woeser succeeded smuggling the manuscript out of the country, translated into Spanish.

Without a doubt one of THE non-fiction titles of 2009!

On Erasmus’s Trail

September 1518.

Erasmus returns to Louvain from Basel, accompanied by a new servant, Joannes Hovius. Mr. Hovius will be a privileged witness of the most turbulent phases in Erasmus’s life, covering three years. During that time, Erasmus has many a heated argument with the conservative theologians of the Louvain University, not in the least with regards to his notorious translation of the New Testament, in which he amends the officially approved version on over 1,000 counts. Further also to the provocative theological method he proposes, through the installation of “the three language committee” and with his so-called heretic views and the condemnation of Luther. Author Joris Tulkens sketches the tough relationship between Erasmus and his servant.

In Louvain, Hovius gets to know a completely different Erasmus than the genius-scientist he served in Basel. His ‘new’ boss turns out to be a control freak who does not trust a living soul and finds it hard to delegate; a man who destroys his enemies with his legendary sarcasm, and does not hesitate to kill off friends. Erasmus is a distraught and ill-tempered man who is no stranger to insinuations and lies. Hovius suspects that his boss, whom he admires for his scientific knowledge, harbours homosexual tendencies, which, together with a great need for friendship and an unreturned quest for love, form the basis for the difficulties he faces in his daily relationships with other people. Realising that he is unable to satisfy all of these needs, Hovius bids his boss farewell at the end of the book, following several dramatic scenes.

Many years later, Erasmus sends Hovius a moving letter in which he apologizes for the unjustly behaviour which he applied towards him, attributing these to his very own, typical, ‘Erasmian’ way. A valuable insight into one of the most legendary genius’s ever!

A 16th Century Christian Amidst the Muslims

In the sixteenth century, the name of Nicolaes Cleynaerts, otherwise known as Nicolaus Clenardus or Nicolao Clenardo, was of great renown. A theologian, humanist, specialist Latin and Greek, excelling educationalist, teacher and knowledgeable of Hebrew, Arabic and the Islam, the man held all the keys to become truly immortal.

As a human being, he was exceptionally courageous to boot. The stubbornness with which he pleaded for a dialogue with those who did not share his religion was extremely rare and admirable in Spain at that time.

Still, Nicolaes Cleynaerts ended up being completely forgotten. Most likely because he trusted his fellow man too much. At the height of his fame, Cleynaerts left for Fez with the intention of starting a peaceful dialogue with the Islam. But he ended up being denounced both by the Muslims and his own supporters.

Chased out of Fez and hunted by the Spanish inquisition he died rid of all his possessions and totally alone, in the Alhambra.

This amazing non-fiction novel, based on historic facts, tells the story of this 16th Century Christian monk who fought for understanding of the Islamic beliefs.

Looking back from highly polarized 2008, Cleynaerts’ story teaches us a thing or two!

The Way to Mecca

Flemish TV-series (12 episodes) based on the book

Rights available for all other languages – Book & TV series

Are we facing a clash between the West and the Islam? Or are these but the growing pains of a rapidly globalizing, multicultural world? Jan Leyers, the author who scored big time with The Shadow of the Cross in which he travelled to Jerusalem like a modern day crusader, wanted to know.

His story begins in Cordoba, from where he starts his journey to Mecca, for Muslims the most secret place in the world. In-between the two cities Leyers lives through an exciting journey, passing the many cities where the secrets of the Islam lie hidden: Casablanca and Fez; threatening Algiers, Tripoli and Cairo; mysterious Damascus, Istanbul and explosive Teheran.

The travelling writer visits mosques, bathing houses and Koran schools, gets through to the head of the Muslim fraternity and has disconcerting discussions with ayatollahs and Bedouins, school girls and terrorists. Slowly but surely he finds out what lives and broods in the Islamic World, what unifies Muslims and Westerners and what divides them.

The Way to Mecca is a deep and thorough account of a journey through a world few people in the Western hemisphere know. A world which many fear, out of which no one returns unchanged.

The Shadows of the Cross

The Shadow of the Cross offers a truly unique blend… part travel story, part history and part actual history, the current world disturbing conflicts between Serbs and Croatians, Turks and Greek, Israeli and Palestinians are tackled in critical manner, refreshingly situated against the backdrop of the middle-aged crusades as a point of reference.

Leyers handles the subject matter in a great way and is a fine writer, while nice line drawings and five maps make it easy to follow both his route and that of the initial crusaders.

One of the most appealing and open-minded books to deal with the Christian and Islamic beliefs, both then and now.

Everything Passes but the Past

Civil wars, repression and totalitarian regimes never die out completely. The unanswered questions and the sorrow they cause remain with those who endured them, as well as their children and grandchildren.

Internationally renowned political scientist Luc Huyse depicts how people from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe deal with a pain that doesn’t cease. He observed the trial against dictator Mengistu in Ethiopia; listened in former Yugoslavia to survivors of a mass murder; witnessed how Franco was being reburied in Spain; talked with committee of truth members in South Africa and found what made the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo stand out.

Taming the past is what it is all about, time and again. And, if at all possible, peace to the hearts to those who live today and tomorrow. But what should be past, does not fade. When will the organized storing of memory or the work of committees bring more healing than pain? Is to forgive and forget – amnesty, guaranteed to fail? And why is it full of risk to work with international courts of justice as we are doing nowadays?

Is there, when all is said and done, a correct way to deal with it? U.N. employed scientist Huyse presents a true masterpiece book on one of the most poignant international issues around today.

A must read!

Revenge – Forgiveness and Law in the Age of Genocide

The past years it has become increasingly obvious that we continuously bump into the limitations of our international laws and procedures. They simply do not allow us to properly fight genocide or other major crimes against humanity. The current system does not withhold the trespassers to do exactly what they intend to do.

This important work treats the complex questions that arise with regards to laws, rules and forgiveness, using case studies such as the Holocaust, Ruanda, Kosovo and Kurdistan.

As the author of thirteen previous books and hundreds of texts on the subject which have been internationally published, Australian professor Alastair Davidson is regarded as an absolute authority where human rights are concerned. This new and definite study by the man is a must have for all those who wonder how the victims of inhuman behaviour can find justice, now and in the future.

The number one book for all who want to know how our world functions, malfunctions, and what can be done as far as laws and procedures on an international level are concerned.

The Art of Shaving

Every beardless man who has the good fortune of reaching a blessed age, has shaved himself for – on average – 2300 hours. That’s something! Today, in a society where everything needs to happen ever more rapidly, a quick shave has become a habit to many. As a sort of counter – response, a lot of men are growing tired of our overly hectic lifestyle. One aspect illustrating their weariness clearly is their return to the classic ‘wet shave with open knife’. The Art of Shaving is all about the attention for and careful use of quality materials. About the loving gaze true men give their marvellous shaving brushes, made of the purest badgers hair. About the charm and the smell of the finest shaving soap, the concentration when striking the knife over the strap and while shaving. The little boys men sometimes are, admiring a sharp and effective knife with a little grin, knowing how great they will be feeling within mere minutes.
